My Feeds

I have found myself becoming a bit of an RSS evangelist lately… there are so many people losing out just because they don’t know about it! These days, with big name sites now offering feeds, it is becoming an unrivalled force for receiving information. I don’t know how I ever lived without mine.

So during my preachings I have told some of my hopeful converts that I would publish a list of OPMLS that they might enjoy as some sort of starter pack. I hope that if they at least install the cartoons, they will be hooked on feeds for life.

So here they are, kinda sorted into loose categories:

If anyone has any feeds which they think I would enjoy PLEASE send them to me. Nothing like a new discovery!

For those who don’t know what to do with these files:

Firstly get a feed reader. I use FeedDemon which is kick-ass, there is also Newsgator which is a handy Outlook plugin. Its convenient but I stopped using it because with heaps of feeds and emails Outlook was slowing to a frustrating crawl. Best option of all, ditch Outlook and use free Thunderbird which has a built in feed reader! Either way there are lots of options, go and set something up.

Once you have a feed reader then import these OPML files into it, and wam bam you’ll have a set of RSS subscriptions.

I should point out that Thunderbird 1.0 currently can't import OPML, but the new version 1.5 (for which the beta is out) can. Still, OPML files are human readable, sorta, so you can get by with even the most basic feed reader.

nifty selection of feeds. i especially like the general marketing one. how about a "general importers of fine italian food and wine in south africa" opml?

RSS feeds are addictive. Without my polydaily dive into my feeds I feel hopelessly disconnected to the world. I do feel, however, that most feeds are the same thing as nifty freeware someone Ive come across that serves to streamline a small part of a particular part of a task (i.e. font readers, contact managers, Microsoft add-ins developed by some random geek in the states). Eventually I get irritated, uninstall it/ignore it and revert to old habits. I must admit, I didnt know I could have cartoons arriving via RSS! Just what I need: another distraction. I'll wait and see how long I can resist the temptation! haha! Feeds I cant live without are the iAfrica South Africa News, International News and Business News feeds. I got my MTNInfo SMS about Zuma at the same time as my feed from iAfrica so the news is very current. I also enjoy the writing style of the full iAfrica articles and these feeds save me surfing time to see whats happening. Thanks for the suggestions. Im definitely going to give FeedDemon a bash.
