Another Fish: Going Swimmingly

Well, three days in and I’m still here.

Darren wasn’t kidding when he said we would either sink or swim. The water here is deep, very deep, and right now I feel like I’m splashing around with all of the dignity of a wet muskrat. But that’s a sign of the learning curve that we find ourselves on and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I came to Quirk a couple of months out of varsity. Having completed a B.Com, last year I studied a Post-Graduate Diploma in Marketing. The diploma was intense, covering a wide variety of disciplines, including eMarketing. During my studies I found that I was spending a disproportionate amount of time online, something that my father was only too eager to point out when the bill for our then dial-up connection would arrive. So when I came across this opportunity for the Quirk internship, I didn’t hesitate.

During my post-graduate year I found myself working extensively in groups. Most of our assignments involved coming up with novel ideas and then and implementing them. As last year drew to a close, I was worried that I’d never again experience the excitement and fun of working in such dynamic groups in such a fun environment. Luckily, my worries were laid to rest on my first day on the job. Whether due to Lyle’s exuberance about SEO or Rob’s first-day lecture on what makes the perfect muesli, there’s something infectious about this place. You can’t help but get caught up in whatever project is going on.

I have a very business-oriented academic background, and I’m hoping that drawing from it I’ll be able to add some useful insights for the other QuirkStars.

Right now though, I’m just trying to keep my head above water and make the transformation from muskrat to a more dignified creature.

Carlos is actually not an intern. Nor is he human. He is actually a pistol shrimp in human disguise. That's right - ask him..
