Web 2.0 - The Future has Begun

If ever the term Web 2.0 has been vague or confusing to you then watch this incredible video by Michael Wesch, an Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University.

If I were to start a post on Web 2.0 in broad terms it would have to be a series much like our Quirk eMarketing 101 series. I would rather keep quiet and let you enjoy the beauty and power of video which relays what could take one hours to explain to a beginner.

The inspirational electronica song for the video is by DEUS (not the rock band from Belgium) and is available to listen and download for FREE(by his consent) with Bittorrent and eMule. Have a look at the section headed "Your rights to this Album". There certainly is a new way of thinking arising and I for one am excited to part of this movement way beyond just what I do here at Quirk. The implications of Web 2.0

hit at our very core nature as human beings and could go a long way to shaping how ours and our children's future plays out...hopefully for the better.

The future has begun again... and it has a really cool soundtrack.

musicians allowing free downloads happened way before "web 2.0".

Yes, free music has in essence always been available. Its more about the synergy between the video, music and distribution thereof. I have rarely run into those "conditions of use" in my web experience. However, the matter is still very touchy in the music industry and record companies are slow in getting the picture. Web 2.0 is pushing the industry to change the way it markets music and many other products for that matter. The power of sharing is overpowering the copyright laws...because it can actually be profitable to get the numbers initially distributing a product for free. No one can argue with these numbers. Musicians/ web businesses are now far better at utilising free distribution to make money off their online products than the pre-Web2.0 era. Last I looked there were 868 834 views for that video on You Tube. Thats a couple of hundred thousand more than DEUS had 2 weeks ago. He's probably starting to reap the rewards in one way or another if he has his wits about him. Lastly, the creator of the video would probably not have used the music if he had to pay for it.
