Who is this Tim Shier then?

I am the newest of the QuirkStars, my focus - events co-ordination at Quirk eMarketing.

Born in 1985 in East London and then being deported to Cape Town I was fortunate to have experienced a bit of, shall we call it, both worlds – the secure, soft small town and the dangerous, high-paced city!

After leaving Rondebosch Boys high school in 2003 I moved to UCT's Bsc faculty. Within the quiet enclosed walls of UCT I plotted to take over the world through my study of Computer Science and Psychology (as my majors) with the hope of one day developing Artificial Intelligence. Alas, I didn't have the academic vigour required for such aspirations and instead invested my time in the development of other facets of my being. I mean, who really wants to cause the single worst invention/creation in world history – I’m sure I will discuss this further online.

In an effort to develop myself I joined UCT RAG as what they like to call a Rookie (in reality, I was free labour). After a year of carrying coke, hay bales and generally getting very dirty I applied to the General Committee where I organised Orientation Week and a large Corporate Golf Day. During this time I came to realise my affinity for the operations of events and in 2006 I applied to the executive committee as the organizations logistics manager. While I got that duty I also go IT manager and Intervarsity Project Manager. This left me with all the event logistics, all website and computer related queries and a project to run. Moreover, the event which I had to run was the single event with the highest risk profile out of all the RAG events so I was required to perform (the words “Dance bear dance!” come to mind). In 2007 I was awarded the position of Vice Chair Operations (logistics but as a vice chair position) and the pilot project co-ordination (sourcing and introduction of new projects – management of sustainability). This gave me an overall view of the RAG events including the logistics, financial, marketing and HR. Needless to say I was working 18 hour days 7 days a week (for free) and got the nickname “Rambo” by the UCT authorities.

In 2006, while all the RAG work was going on I took it upon myself to get a job and somehow I ended up juggling 4 jobs (excluding RAG and my academic). One of which is my major passion – Magic.

Having been doing magic for about 4 years now – focusing on close-up walkabout magic (including cards, silks, coins and mentalism) – I have built up a bit of a reputation on campus and it seems that whenever I have a couple of drinks the cards and coins are close on hand... needless to say I don't remember many of the people I meet through magic ;)

All in all I am a 22 year old who magician, Quirk eMarketer in training and Events Co-ordinator who loves long walks on the beach, poetry and doesn't drink beer – so ladies – I guess this is a good time to do a little personal advertising: I am single and will be around this blog so pop by and make this campaign worth while ;). I mean who knows, and as we like to say at Quirk, through our marketing means we will Optimise Conversions and turn casual lookers into clients (not implying that I work the corners – of course!)

Ahhhhh..I remember those good 'ole UCT RAG days.
Pulling beer from the ice buckets, hands turning blue, floats building parties, good times.

I also really enjoy magic. Luckily when I was with my previous company, I went to vegas to "work" and had the chance to see copperfield live. Very cool, although I think I prefer the close-up nature of street magic more.
Good luck at quirk...
