My experience at Quirk

Max Fitchet, a grade 11 pupil at Wynberg Boys' High School recently spent two days at the QuirkStation on a Work Shadow program. When he asked me what he could do my answer was what it always is… “Why don’t you write a blog post?” So he did…

“Both the days that I spent at Quirk eMarketing were an absolute learning experience. The working environment was something I was not expecting – everyone was so chilled and the suit and tie look definitely doesn’t apply. Even though everyone was so relaxed, there was still a lot work to be done and deadlines to be met, and I think this kind of environment enables more constructive work to be done.
A totally new concept to me was MSN Messenger, not the program itself but more of how it is used. Nobody seemed to be talking much – until I realised that even if you sit right next to someone you chat on MSN rather than face to face. Everyone has everyone else's contacts there, so it saves a total of about 10 seconds of walking time per conversation, as well as making it easier to share ideas across the office without having to disrupt everyone else.
When getting to know everyone at the office on my first day, I was introduced to Heidi who takes care of the PPC side of things. At the time I had no idea what this was and really couldn't understand why they would have someone handling cement at an eMarketing company. Luckily I didn't say anything… I found out what it really was a bit later while I was working my way through the Quirk site.

PPC, ORM, SEO were a few terms I learnt about while I was there and everything was really interesting, if not a tad overwhelming.
One of my interests is programming and I was amazed at how basic the Java we learn at school is so basic in comparison the things that the programmers at Quirk do. Even though I had no clue with regard to what was going on, I still was fascinated by how people (like myself) can use something, and really have no clue how it really works.
So overall, I definitely enjoyed my time at Quirk, but more importantly learned a great deal.”

Shame, now I feel bad. I think I may have actually growled at him the day he came to learn about PPC. Sorry dude. I'm much nicer normally. Promise ;)
