SynthaSite beta launch

TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington and Read/WriteWeb’s Josh Catone might have blogged about SynthaSite first, back when it was in early alpha, but this QuirkStar was the first person outside of SynthaSite to have a look at SynthaSite beta, before it was released yesterday :-P.

Grainy cell phone pic of a SynthaSite developer hard at work (taken 27Aug 2007).

In a nutshell you are able to do the following with SynthaSite:
  • Build your website in minutes with no programming knowledge!
  • Get started quickly with our growing template library
  • Over a dozen site templates to start building with
  • Free hosting & free domain name
  • Download your site & host it yourself if you want!
I signed up for a new SynthaSite account and created a website quicker than you could put a Squidoo page together - impressive!

I spotted a few bugs and sent the SynthaSite support team an email. Within a few minutes I had received a reply from Vinny Lingham, SynthaSite’s CEO, himself. Impressive implementation of Quirk’s 10 commandments to killer eMarketing. They called me soon after to ensure that the problems I’d experienced have been resolved.

Some of the widgets available when creating your SynthaSite include: integrating Flickr Images, YouTube videos and any RSS feeds. There are lots more and it is really easy to do.

Check out the page I’ve created and sign up for a free SynthaSite account to do it yourself.
My page looks a tad untidy (report season at Quirk is limiting my play time a bit today).
Once you’ve created a SynthaSite come back and share your thoughts, or even the URL, with the rest of us in the comments section below.

Some of you might be wondering, “How will SynthaSite generate revenue by giving away free hosting, free domain names and free ‘development’ of your own website?”
What could the SynthaSite business model possibly be? Will it be subscription, razor and blades, freemium, a professional open-source business model or a combination of the above? One can only speculate. What are you views?

Thanks Rafiq

Our business model is quite complex :-) Which means that we don't want to say too much just yet!

I can say that we intent to earn money from:

Selling .com/.net other TL domains
Revenue share on advertising
Freemium upgrades

This is all way down the line - and whatever we release as free, even in Beta, stays free!

thanks again!

Vinny

Rafiq, thanks for the heads up on Synthasite which looks good. My problem was that Vinny sounded like he recorded it in his bathroom. The music was good but the echo on his voice was difficult. Like you suggest I will sign up and see how it works for me.
