Being the
die-hard sports fan that I am, I was watching a
Pro20 cricket match the other night when they cut to the on-field commentator chatting with
Jonty Rhodes. Seeing Jonty Rhodes at one of these matches is hardly surprising, as he is a representative for the sponsor
Standard Bank. What was surprising though was to see him
with a laptop next to the field,
blogging the event live.
Yes you heard right: blogging!!!
He went on to explain that it's an initiative from the Standard Bank Pro20 competition to engage the younger viewers through the
digital medium. The
official Pro20 website offers more than just a blog. Apart from the blog you can also find a
Twitter feed and links to their
Facebook group and
YouTube channel. They have even gone so far as to provide match updates through the ever so popular
Mxit software.
It was a pleasant surprise to see that the Pro20 competition embraced
social media to such an extent to engage their younger, more Internet-savvy viewers. One can only hope that they inspire other sporting competitions to follow their example.
Hey Jean,
Thanks for the great post. The best thing about this project has been the Bank's willingness to try new things.
Something else we have found is that the commentators and 'old media' have really embraced what we are doing - and have made the effort to understand all the elements.
There will be some more activity in the social media environment in the next day or so around Pro20 - we'll keep you posted.
Cheers,
Angus
