iPhone! iPhone! iPhone!

Given how nutso (yes, I've decided that that's a word) people have gone over the new iPhone, I had no choice but to do this week's Friday Fact Box on this very popular piece of digital wizardry (or over-hyped device depending on your point of view). Just like last time round, the buzz has been palpable, meaning that the statistics I've found are not just about the iPhone itself - but about people's reactions to it online.

I have to admit that there are tons and tons of statistics out there to wade through. Luckily for you, I've hand picked the most interesting about the first and second incarnation of Apple's iPhone.

From Erik Mednis: Future Forward, iPhone Statistics  19 January 2007
A study from market researcher Interpret, found that:

  • For 3 out of 10 buyers the iPhone was their first Apple product
  • For 40% the iPhone was their first iPod

From MacWorld, Apple iPhone Event 2.0 March 6th 2008
Based on the first eight months (after being on sale):

  • The iPhone has garnered a 28 % market share, second only to RIM (Blackberry), based on Q4 data
  • About the Ap store: "Developers will pick the price, Apple takes 30%, developer gets 70% which is then paid monthly."

From Mmetrics, iPhone Hype Holds Up March 18th 2008

  • 85% of iPhone users browse the mobile Web; iPhone is the top device for news and information accessed on a mobile browser
  • 30% of iPhone owners watched mobile TV or video, versus a 4.6 market average, and this is more than double the rate for all smartphone users
  • 49.7% percent accessed a social networking site in January, nearly twelve times the market average

(This post had way more cool stats, worth having a look at if you're interested).
