The eMarketing Textbook, Open Education and an Excellent Launch

by Tim Shier

2008/07/29

Friday was a busy, event filled and textbooky day. In the morning Kat, Lyndi and I found ourselves in a place we hadn't been in a long time - a lecture, on eMarketing no less! We were there to chat about and sell the Quirk eMarketing textbook, eMarketing: the essential guide to online marketing, that was launched last week.

Course lecturer Justin Beneke described the book in glowing terms (thanks Justin!), after which I had an opportunity to address the students. We were then swarmed by UCT students wanting to purchase the textbook - exciting times!

Lovely studenty people

On Friday evening the long awaited textbook launch took place at the Book Lounge on Roeland Street. There was some great wine from Stormhoek and the Book Lounge staff were excellent and attentive to the many guests.

Dave Duarte of iCommons South Africa and Mark Horner from the Shuttleworth Foundation spoke on Creative Commons and Open Education. Both great speakers, and we were honoured to have them there. Rob then spoke about the textbook and all the work that went into it and sent out a big thanks to all involved. I dare say he thrived under the conditions.

In closing I have to say that I, along with all the QuirkStars, am incredibly proud of this textbook and it marks a massive step forward. On a more personal note I would specially like to thank Lyndi for putting the event together and to everybody who came through - this truly does mark only the beginning.

From the top: The room before it got packed (Rob, Craig, Tristan from MyVideo, Bev from Mango-OMC and Pam Sykes all there), The lovely people from the Shuttleworth Foundation: Helen King, Mark Horner, Karien Bezuidenhout and Sarah Horner.
