SEO and Marriage - Personal ORM

by Tim Shier

Finally, I have found a way of merging these two apparently unrelated topics into a blog post – sigh, creativity is…

Over the past couple of months I have gone through an interesting process of building my personal brand in the online space. Needless to say its been tricky but I’m now quite happy that I own the entire first and second pages of Google searches for my name. This led me to an interesting thought: what if I were to change my name?

Ok, so I have no interest in ever changing my name but what about the ladies? If you choose to get married your years of SEO and brand development could be washed away if you opt for replacing your maiden name. And if you get divorced (which could happen much later in your career) then you might want to revert back to your maiden name and therefore return to the SERPs which you have left unmanaged for the duration of your marriage. Potentially scary stuff!

Personal Online Reputation Management is fast becoming a necessity in today’s “I’ll just  Google it” society. People are already making employment (and corporate investment) decisions based on an applicant's “Google CV”. I think its a matter of a couple of years before individuals start making dating and marriage decisions based on their dates Google CV. It's then a matter of time before people marry (or change their name) to escape a SERP which is none-too-pretty or to ones which are easier to rank for.

Truth be told, there is somebody in our office who changed their first name to allow for easier rankings… how far would you go to manage your personal reputation?

Given that about 50% of marriages end in divorce, the really easy solution is ... don't change your name.

Many women choose to retain their maiden names for business purposes while changing it for all other aspects of their life.

Hell, many women are choosing to keep their maiden names anyway. We don't live in the 70's any more, it's actually quite an accepted practice these days.

Your discussion is moot. Why make life more complicated than it has to be?

Wow Alex, that is a pessimistic (some may say realistic ) take on the vow of love and life.

I quite like the idea of the double barrel surname i.e. McGuinness-Depp : )

Question is would this minimise one's individual ranking in the SERP's or potentially increase ranking if you select your - maybe- life partner "well"?

Haha - Ms McGuiness-Depp indeed.

Thanks for the comments Alex and Sandy. I see your points and I agree - changing your surname is a little daft, that said, its still quite common.

Many people however are taking a slightly different approach and spend time building their individual brands (on and offline) and I believe this is going to become an increasingly important reason to retain maiden names, secure your online real estate and think about your SERPS.

(Yes, the geek inside me has awakened)

Please tell me it was Harvey who changed his name.

On the double-barrelledness, i think it would increase your SERP as its essentailly a one keyword phrase vs a two key word phrase, the search continuum is smaller

What i dont get is what does "nee" mean?

Nee (with an acute accent on the first e) is the feminine past particple of naitre (circumflex on the i!), which is "to be born" in French.

Josephine Blogs nee Smith means "Josephine Blogs born Smith".

jeez

Are you a ninja?

As someone who is going to be changing her name soon, this is something I have thought about a lot. I'm pretty sure I'm the only Heidi Edelmuller in the world, but Im not going to be the only Heidi Ocker (I googled it and there seems to already be one on Germany). Luckily its still a strange name, so not too much competition on the SERPS. Ask our own Sarah Blake about issues with her SERPS ;)

haha - as i said, marriage can also have its uses :p

@Alex & @SMith - super Ninja more like it... thanks for the random fact :)
