Google Launches AdSense for Games

by Heidi Ocker

2008/10/09

Google announced yesterday that they are widening their advertising network to include in-game advertising with the launch of Adsense for Games™. While in-game advertising is nothing new, Google offering it as part of their AdSense program will certainly make it more accessible to smaller businesses. The plan is to offer CPM and CPC options to integrate “video advertisements into web-based games, complemented by text and image ads”.

According to a comScore study from July 2007 over 200 million people (25% of Internet users) play online games, and this number is expected to grow by 17% each year. Not a bad place to advertise then

Word on the street is Google is also moving into e-commerce to diversify revenue streams http://webcommunityforum.com/2008/10/youtube-looks-for-new-ways-to-drive-revenue/

I wonder how active is SA's online gaming community? Not to sure myself??

Hi Louis

Interesting question about South African gamers. I know we have a few obsessive WOW players here at quirk, so I'm sure we are represented, but definitely not in the majority. At the moment Google are saying in order to be eligible "publishers must have a minimum of 500,000 game plays per day and have 80% of their traffic from the U.S. or the U.K.". So I'll hold off on recommending this to any SA clients for now.
