Joining Quirk UK

by Janet Parkinson

2008/10/21

I’ve been in the UK Quirk office for just over a week and my experience so far has involved being surrounded by really cool QuirkStars; a mind boggling choice of coffees and a rather unnerving phone system with a creepy ring tone that makes you feel like you’re on some Hollywood horror movie set.

Curiously though none of this feels that strange. This is probably because I’ve known Quirk for a long time and knew what to expect. In fact, my claim to fame could be that I previously worked for Quirk’s first UK customer many years ago, so I have been brought up in true Quirk eMarketing style. Being able to link that experience together with my more recent exploits in Social Media and podcasting here in the UK makes for a very interesting and exciting blend.

My background is pretty diverse - I’ve worked in Paris and Norway and have been involved in the fashion industry when I set up an international division for a major clothing manufacturer selling products to large retail stores around Europe. The next step was becoming an Operations Director of an international recruitment and translation company. Then three years ago I started to produce my own podcasts in my spare time, co-founded an online podcast magazine that reviewed international podcasts and then co-founded the UK’s first podcast production company. As I’m always looking for a challenge, assisting Quirk in their endeavours to develop business in the UK (and to conquer the world) was a challenge I just couldn’t resist!

One thing the Quirk team may have noticed about me already is that I’m hopeless at sitting still. With any luck they’ll recognise this as a plus as it means I’ll often be found charging around London, the UK and sometimes abroad talking Quirk, BrandsEye and general Quirky-goodness.

The one thing I hadn’t foreseen was that being the only real Brit in the London QuirkStation does mean that the odd South African word used eludes me. Luckily I have the very sassy Sarah sitting behind me to act as my permanent in-house interpreter. Saying that, I do have a few languages up my sleeve and hopefully I’ll catch up soon - so ‘pas op Ouens - Ek sal my wraak soek!’ (Watch out guys – I will seek my revenge!)
