With Nandos We Can COPE

by Kelly Wheeler

So, if you have all been wide awake, you will have noticed a slight trend in my viral choices (I am of course assuming that you all follow my posts religiously, although not even my mom does that…). Anyway, you observant ones (check out Carlos’ viral for a side note on being observant) will have picked up on the fact that I like politics and tend to favour political virals – the US election had me in a frenzy like a nerd in a computer store. But now that it’s over I am going into withdrawal. Luckily, Nando's saved the day.

Kat and I might have nicked this viral off Matthew Buckland’s site, but in our defence, we are giving him the credit. High Five! But this ad is just so flippin’ awesome, that we had to share it with our own readers. (If you haven’t checked out Matthew’s blog yet – we also recommend that you do, after you’ve caught up on all the news on GottaQuirk of course.)

Back to Nandos. This ad, in my opinion, carries on the trend that we saw in America during the election with brands, celebrities and everyone and his uncle getting involved  - and using the Internet as their medium to do so. While it will also be aired on TV, it seems the ad made it online first. The ad features the South African version of a celebrity, Ms Evita Bezuidenhout herself and makes a powerful statement about the current political affairs in our country.

Hopefully this is a sign that, in the lead up to our own elections, we are going to follow the Americans’ (for once good) example and also use the Internet to vocalise our political feelings and be heard. And if junkies like me are provided with some excellent online entertainment along the way, that’s just a bonus. ;)

Have you seen the blogging sites created for people that want to have their say about COPE, the elections and politics in general.

Simon Grindrod is one of the first of the big names to blog but we are talking to the others and getting them to blog as well

Simons blog is at

Hi Guy!

Thanks so much for your comment - will definitely check it out.
I think it's great that COPE have recognised the power of the Internet and are using it in their campaign. Hopefully the other political parties will follow suit and we can see a real South African debate emerge online.
Here's to an exciting few months leading up to the elections!
