With so many things to contend with as a Web designer (especially the multiple browser issue and the sometimes painful browser testing), I have to admit that I'd rather not have to also worry about how a site looks on a mobile phone.
So I was pleased to discover while surfing the Web on both an iTouch (which is like an iPhone but runs on a stripped down Safari version) and my very basic Nokia (using the Opera browser) that the Quirk site holds up quite nicely. Thanks to standard compliant coding, the website crosses over seamlessly to the mobile phone.
The iTouch, like the iPhone, uses touch screen technology so that there is a larger viewing area. It offers a zoom in function and the option to view the site in a landscape format. It also works on wireless and 3G and is all round a very nifty gadget.
Interestingly, sites like Facebook have found that they have too many features to cram into such a small space. Their solution was to design a site specifically for the iPhone or iTouch – iphone.facebook.com – which cuts away the proverbial fat and leaves only the essential features. They've also used Javascript cleverly so that you are redirected to iphone.facebook.com when you type Facebook.com into the browser.
While having to design and code an entirely different site for the iPhone wouldn't make me very enthusiastic, it's the best idea if your site is too busy and you want to provide a clean and simple experience for your users. It's also worth considering that Safari ignores Flash and Javascript which can cause some problems. Given that people access the Internet on their phones while on the move and need to do so quickly and easily, building a scaled down version of your website really is the best option.
Testing how your site displays on mobile phones is essential. The simulator I would suggest is the iPhone Tester. You should remember though that testers are not always accurate – so it's best to ask your boss to buy an iPhone for testing purposes (Janine are you reading this?). ;)

Haaa! I'm one step ahead ... we have just purchased an iPhone for this very reason {big smile}.
