QuirkStar Party 2008

by Damian Burke

2008/12/15

While Monday is normally our Day in the Life at Quirk day, we thought we'd take a break from the series and tell you about our year end function. The celebrations started shortly after lunchtime last Friday, when the Cape Town QuirkStars climbed into buses headed for the Camps Bay Bowls Club for a crash course in the sport, and an internal tournament of the strategic ball game.

Grant showing his skill.

Countless old age jokes and cringe-worthy lawn bowls terminology puns later, it was obvious who had a keen eye for the sport and how many others preferred the comfort of the clubhouse balcony.

The boys preparing their A-game.

QuirkStars with their awards.

Those that may have a second career in lawn bowls include Shaun ‘Height Advantage’ Oakes, Gavin ‘Original Hips’ Dale and Rob ‘Wood Wonder’ Stokes - not to mention the dynamic duo of Craig Hallet and Mango.

I’d love to share the names of the winning teams, but mass confusion with the bowls scoring system had us focused on the individual throws and badgering commentary rather than the scoreboard.

Into the buses and off to The Waterfront
After a short and sweet prize giving ceremony (thanks to Santi, Sarah and Kat for the interesting prize categories and personalised awards – high five!) and a couple of post-game beers we were ready to leave for Mitchell’s in the V&A Waterfront for the next stage of the evening.

Kelly, Soph and Carlos

Once we’d all settled in and had a bite to eat, Rob invited each of the team leaders to say a few words about their thoughts on 2008, as well as their aspirations for 2009.
With formalities officially out of the way, the focus was on the bar – where the Stars hung out until the final remaining few looked to town for the third and final stage of the evening.

A Final Thank You
On behalf of all the QuirkStars, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Rob, Janine and Craig for their leadership throughout the year, and also to Tim and Lyndi for organising such a fantastic day out of the QuirkStation and into the sun.

Ditto. Thanks to all involved!

The "prize ceremony" was definitely not just thrown together in [high] 5 mins!

I would also like to thank rob, craig, janine, tim and lyndi and the ladies for the rather odd prizes (I still have to explain the "pimp" award to my wife).
