GottaQuirk - Time for a Change

by Grant McLachlan

2009/02/11

GottaQuirk has come a long way since the first post titled “Drip Irrigation” by Craig in 2005. In its almost 4-year life span GottaQuirk has grown tremendously - from just 2 contributors to 50 and a handful of guest bloggers. The design for GottaQuirk, on the other hand, hasn’t changed all that much in the last few years, so we decided to give our precious blog a much needed redesign.

The design route chosen was based on a discussion I had with the GottaQuirk team, namely Sarah M, Kat, Tim and Jean. We decided that we wanted the new design to move away from the more “corporate” look and feel and show a bit more of the relaxed side of Quirk. It was mentioned that our blog belongs to everyone at Quirk and with the huge variety of people who work here we needed to give it a personality that we could relate to.

So, into the design I plunged. I got fairly carried away during my fist attempt and decided to pull in the reigns as the design started to look like one of my old sketchbooks. I wasn’t happy with this, so I went back to the drawing board. After reworking some scamps I felt much happier with the new route - fairly similar to my first idea, but not as cluttered and more structured.

After a few suggestions, and once everyone was happy with the changes it was on to Marius, Jean and Louw to work their magic.

Below are a few snaps of different elements of the design so that you can get a very rough idea of how the design evolved:

The end result is one that we are all happy with and we now have a new home for the thoughts and ideas that we share with you guys.

Thanks to everyone involved for making this happen, high fiiiiiiive, it’s niiiiiice!

Stumbled here from Muti. Don't know what the old design looked like, but this one is pleasing to the eye.

I can't help thinking that background would look better if was vertically tiled, but that could just be me.
