Last week we looked at some juicy Social Media Statistics. To take it one step further, we decided to look into our own backyard to see how South Africans participate online, both as consumers and advertisers.

Did you know that a year ago, 1 in every 6 internet searches in SA were from mobile phones?

Posted by Brett Pringle on 2009/03/06

That surprises me, but is totally believable.... how else would they have downloaded MXit?

But seriously, mobile is the way to be thinking in most SA sectors. I wonder if anyone will pioneer a mobile SA search engine?

It's an idea, i know that Google SA revamped their local mobile engine specifically for SA, as the search volumes were there for mobile search.

I did a presentation last year about the SA market, came across some interesting figures, definitely worth a read for any SA folks in the online industry:

"Masie says that 78% of all people with mobile phones in South Africa don't have personal computers, and that 85% of this "no-PC" group will never own a PC."

People talk about the importance of mobile a lot but it's always cool to see some actual data.

thanks Brett!

Brett, Google should never be allowed on mobile phones!

Arguments should be won by the person with the greatest ability to bulldust, not the know-it-all with a wap enabled phone.

Don't get me started on cricket's referrals.

Great article and thanks for the follow up stats Brett.

With such an increase of SA people going online there will no doubt be big profits for local search and directory sites such as:
www.yellowpages.co.za
www.rapidinfo-directory.co.za
www.ananzi.co.za.

It seems like even www.brabys.co.za is making a comeback.

Come one South Africa share the love!

I agree!

But... I have never heard about www.rapidinfo-directory.co.za before. Who are they?

Im sure they dont belong with the likes of the Yellowpages!
