Have you ever added a client as a friend on Facebook? People are increasingly managing relationships via Social Media - personally and professionally - which has got to be affecting the way we interact in our daily lives. Herewith some stats and pretty graphs to explore this theoy:

From Netimperitave – 'Digital stalking'  turns off UK business (March 2009)

  • 30% of the workers surveyed feel harassed by the sheer number of messages people send them
  • Many also admit that they themselves are never sure of the best way to contact people
  • One in 10 people surveyed have customers and clients as friends on personal social networking sites such as Facebook.
  • One in six (15 per cent) of the 18 to 24s surveyed saying they use or would use these tools to manage customer relationships, compared to just two per cent of 45s or over
  • Six times as many 18 to 24-year-olds use or would use microblogs such as Twitter to manage customer relationships compared to 45s or over
  • The research also revealed a real concern by nearly a third (29 per cent) of managers surveyed that they would lose customers if they did not get better at using technology to communicate with them
  • 42 percent said their organisation does not provide guidelines to help employees effectively use the communication tools listed in the survey, such as email

From Nielsen -  News Release (March 2009)

  • Visited by 67% of the online population, "member communities" (social networks and blogs) have become the fourth most popular category, ahead of personal email
  • It is growing twice as fast as the other four largest sectors (search, portals, PC software and email)

From Overstated – Maintained Relationships on Facebook  (March 2009)

(Quite a cool post, I suggest you go read it if you're interested)

Maintained Relationships on Facebook Chart

From BiologistWell Connected? The biological implications of ‘social networking’ (Feb 2009) (PDF)

  • Over the last 2 decades the proportion of people living alone has doubled, which has no doubt affected the way we interact, see the table below. (Where social interaction obviously refers to physical interaction).

Do you use Social Media to connect with your clients? I'd love to know what channels you use and which you find most useful. Post a comment and let me know.
