After Louw's post about Mobile sites that get it right, it occured to me that we should share some statistics on mobile use - i.e. point out just exactly why you should care

We've done posts on the Mobile Web and Mobile Advertising before for the Friday Fact Box, but below are some more recent statistics for your number-related pleasure (thanks to Sarah B for passing on many of the resources).  If there's an area you'd like some stats on please don't hesitate to let me know in the comments!

From 7th Mass Media in 2008 (PDF) (Dec 2008)

  • Almost 50% of the world's population has a mobile phone.
  • Almost 20% of the world's population uses the Internet.

From Experian Survey (June 2008)

  • Twice as many people use text (SMS or Short Messaging Service) messages as use email.

From SMS or Die A mobileStorm White Paper (2009)

  • Four mobile phones are sold for every PC that is sold.

From The Glittering Allure of the Mobile Society  (November 2008)

  • A Unisys survey revealed that if we lose our wallet, on average we report it in 26 hours. But if we lose our mobile phone, on average we report it in 68 minutes.
  • A global survey by BDDO in 2005 found that six out of 10 people sleep with the mobile phone physically in bed with them.
  • Considering all subscription news services online on the Internet, Japan’s NTT DoCoMo has more paying subscribers on one mobile news service than all online newspapers worldwide combined.

From China Tech News – China Mobile Publishes Operating Statistics for January 2009 (Feb 2009)

  • The statistics show that the number of new users for China Mobile increased by 6.67 million in the first month of 2009, which was lower than the 7.07 million user increase in December 2008.
  • The net increase of China Mobile's users was 6.44 million, a year-on-year decrease of 8.5% and a decrease of 8.9% compared with the previous month.
  • The total number of its users reached 463 million.

From Youth Marketing Statistics – India and China – Mobile Subscribers at January (2009)

  • India added a staggering 15.41 million new mobile subscribers in January 2009, taking the country’s total number of wireless subscribers to 362.3 million, up from 233.63 million in the same month a year ago.
  • India reported 10.81 million cellphone subscriber net additions in December 2008 and 10.35 million new subscribers in November.
