Big Brands Using Social Media Celebrities

by Lyndi Lawson

On Thursday Kat asked me to write a viral. I said I would do it only if she found me a really cool viral to write about. Of course, ever the obliging blog writer, blog manager and blog everythinger, she found me this video.

Not only is it a really cool video to watch, featuring some slick dance moves that even our own Gosling would be proud of, but it also has an interesting background. The Makem Mover is a Sunderland fan (that’s a UK football team for the less fanatical among us) and was originally caught on camera at a soccer match, doing his thing. Made increasingly famous by British Saturday morning football show, Soccer AM the Makem Mover was finally snapped up by mobile phone giants T-Mobile. This video is one of the ads that they have done together.

It’s a great example of viral marketing and an even better example of a big brand taking advantage of a figure made popular by Social Media.

I thought this was a great viral for Twitter - showing one's twitter popularity in the form of an e-P3nis - http://barryborsboom.wordpress.com/2009/03/24/how-we-created-a-twitter-viral/

Thanks onelargeprawn. That is certainly an interesting (and unusual) case study :)

Some nice commentary inherent in it as well I think. :)
