Onwards to Nairobi

After finishing our seminars at the Rwanda Tourism College in Kigali we travelled North to the Virunga Mountains for a once in a lifetime experience - seeing the Mountain Gorillas. Our visit coincided with Ted Turner’s visit to Rwanda and for our band of geeks breakfast with Ted at our lodge was a highlight.  We trekked for over 4 hours through the jungle to the gorillas – got very muddy and saw the Kwitonda Group. Thanks Edwin for organising an amazing trip.

Gorillas

From Virunga we had one final night in Kigali before pushing on to Nairobi. The sessions in Nairobi were well attended with students from Strathmore, Kenya Airways, Kenya Tourism Board, Visa Hotels and many others. Rob joined the group – I presented on Day 1 and Rob took over on Day 2. The audience in Nairobi were excited about Seacom and the changes that would come once the cable gets plugged in. They know that it will present a world of business opportunities and begin to alleviate some of the challenges they have had with doing business online. The one big challenge that kept cropping up is the ability to take payments online – it’s something that has come up throughout my travels in Uganda, Rwanda and again in Kenya. I sincerely hope the banks are actively finding a solution to this issue.

With that my travels ended and I returned to Jozi. Rob continues to Arusha, Zanzibar and Mombassa.

Hi Thabo

It was certainly an experience - and I learned heaps from it. The more that tourism businesses in Africa take control of their online spaces, the more exposure and success they will have. It's great to put them on the road to this.
