This economic climate has affected the world over (and much to my dismay, brought an abrupt end to my Sunday splurge of Woolies cheesecake) but interestingly enough, in the case of the iPhone and their growing applications store, things couldn’t seem rosier. iPhone applications have recently surpassed the BILLION download mark in just months - check out these stats to get a bit better acquainted with how the iPhone has succeeded in targeting both types of user well, catering equally to business users requiring email and Web capabilities as well as those more interested in photos, videos and music.

From Nielsen – Users can now download the app through iTunes or directly from their cellphones (2009)

  • All the technological developments seen in the last century alone, there has been a vast decline in the performance of traditional media outlets. For this reason, marketers are exploring emerging vehicles which operate on mobile platforms.
  • The iPhone offered more than 25, 000 applications that catered for the interests and needs of diverse audience - from budgeting to calculating tips to bill paying to shopping.

From iPhone-Singapore – Interesting statistics for Apple iPhone apps (2009)

  • Only 1% of users who download an application become permanent users.
  • Cutting the price of paid apps increased demand by 130%, whereas raising the price of paid apps decreases demand by 25%.
  • Sports applications seemed more likely to keep users attention for more than a day whereas utilities were lease likely to.
  • If an app appears on the top-100 list, there is an average of 230% in download increase (Very appealing to the application developers).

From Techcrunch - iPhone App Store: The Early List of Top Downloads (July 10, 2008)

  • iPhone applications have proved to be nothing short of amazing – “That’s because they leverage the groundbreaking technology in iPhone — like the Multi-Touch interface, the accelerometer, GPS, real-time 3D graphics, and 3D positional audio.”
