How To Promote Two Things at Once

by Daniel Neville

2009/06/06

So by now im sure most of you have seen the wonderfully hilarious video of the encounter between Sacha Baron Cohen and Eminem at this years MTV movie awards. If you missed it, Baron Cohen, in character as flamboyant fashion reporter "Bruno" and dressed as what looked like an angel with an exposed rear end, flew in above Sunday's award show audience on a wire presumably on his way to the stage. The comedian then "crashed" into an overhead obstacle and was lowered into the audience - right into Eminem's lap; his bare but cheeks in the rapper's face. I think the funniest part of the whole stunt was Eminem’s minders struggling to get Bruno's bum out of his face... On first watching he genuinely looks pissed off, Eminem that is.

What got me thinking about this little stunt was the fact that Eminem, after storming out of the awards and spewing forth the exact words you would expect to come out of his mouth, returned to perform his latest single on stage. Both of these men have something to promote at the moment: Sacha Baron Cohen and his new movie "Bruno" and Eminem and his first album since 2004 titled Relapse. What better way to do it than through a stunt like this?

I know it was filmed and broadcast on TV but it was obvious that it would make it onto the Internet and no doubt go viral... which it did.  Since the 'stunt' Eminem has admitted that he knew exactly what was in store for him, which just makes me like the whole thing even more. It seems the rapper does have a sense of humour. Brilliantly played I say, what a way to steal the lime light. And the BEST thing of all - Zac Efron looking so utterly confused even though he had just won an award!

*Update We've updated the video as the orginal was removed for copyright infringement. ;(

Hands down the most even this week. :)

Predictably, the original clip's been removed for copyright violation, but this one's still live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-csipe3TzMg&feature=related

Just brace yourself for 30 seconds of Twilight related propaganda at the end.

Hey Tim,

Ja I was actually wondering why the original clip was removed - made me think that it wasn't so planned after all. Then again maybe that was the point...

either way its generated some good press which no one can really be upset about.

This was excellent. And my guess is Eminem was probably not expecting Bruno at all... Legend.
