Modern Art aint What it Used to Be - Banksy vs the Bristol Museum

Mostly, graffiti is regarded as an urban curse; an unnecessary defacing of public property. Artists like the (probably) UK-born Banksy have taken this perception and firmly given it the finger.

Banksy is a pseudo-anonymous artist who has been described as ‘like batman but better.’ His art satirically makes reference to politics, art and culture. His latest display is entitled Banksy vs Bristol Museum.

Some of Banksy’s more notable art works include the following:

  • He once climbed into the penguin enclosure at the London Zoo and stencilled “We’re bored of fish” in letters that were 7 ft high.
  • At Bristol Zoo, he left the message 'I want out. This place is too cold. Keeper smells. Boring, boring, boring.' in the elephant enclosure.
  • Known for sneaking artworks into world renowned galleries and museums and hanging them there, Banksy has ‘exibited’ in the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York and in the London Tate Gallery.
  • According the Wikipedia, Banksy removed and replaced 500 copies of Paris Hilton's debut CD, Paris, in 48 different UK record stores with his own cover art and remixes by Danger Mouse. Several copies of the CD were purchased by the public before stores were able to remove them, some going on to be sold for as much as £750 on online auction websites such as eBay. His cover art for the album took a number of forms, one of which was Paris, digitally altered so that she appeared topless while others showed her body with her dog’s head. One cover showed her stepping out of her luxury car. The picture was edited to include a group of homeless people, and it included the caption "90% of success is just showing up

Using the web to his advantage, Banksy produced this trailer for his exhibition. According to the Viral Video Chart, it has been viewed 250,657 times since being discovered on June 12th. Mentioned in 247 blog posts and attracting 128 comments, this video has gone beyond the realm of the social media geeks and into the real world – an impressive feat.

Brilliant - Banksy has really learnt how to grab peoples attention, a true ninja of the modern art world. Just out of interest his work has become so popular that when I was in London in 2006/2007 there were people offering walk about tours to go and view his work on the walls and surfaces of London - now that's cool for any artist.

This is awesome!

What a social experiment. Would the concept work in South Africa..?!

Thanks for the comments :) @Lindsay, theoretically it could work, but it's a question that's difficult to answer. I think in South Africa, it would be harder to become as much of a cult hero because of the disconnected nature of society here. Also, we're a bit behind - graffiti here is still very much vandalism in most cases. There are some notable graffiti artists around and about however and they are being recognised. Check out: http://foxinni.com/graffiti/cape-town-grafitti-woodstock/ for some examples.

Banksy is an urban genius who can poke fun at the estabilshment.

I don't think our establishment is ready to have fun poked at it, ask Shapiro..

@Smith. Absolutely, true. There's too much tension and hypersensitivity here and fun poking is often misconstrued to be something more sinister. To play devil's advocate though, Shapiro targets individuals while from what I have seen, Banksy takes a more general approach. The latter also has anonymity on his side, so he perhaps is more able to get away with opinionated social and political commentary.
