Guest Spot: Codename Avian and $500

by Smith

2009/08/24

Ed's Note: Mr. Smith, who also happens to be one of our clients, has been a guest poster on GottaQuirk before and we enjoy his slightly zany ideas. When he approached us with his current plan we could not help but offer him some space to share it. So do take a look at what he's up to - frankly, it's nuts. But we love it.

_________________________________________________

I present you with Codename: Avian. A winged solution to our data problems. Launching 09.09.09

An interesting experiment is going to come from Durban in the next few weeks.

Can data be transmitted between two points faster by a bird than by digital means? Can a bird “out -deliver” our land-based telecom providers? Can it be powered and encouraged by Social Media?

Pigeon Race 2009

The broadband revolution has come and gone. Seacom, the new cable to the Internet, is taking forever. The ADSL price war is still simmering and is not providing the answers to the connectivity issues in our country right now. It's time to make a change, go back to the roots of the past, because that's how innovation is born.

I'm looking for ideas and support from you guys to drive my birdy idea. And I have so many questions:

  • Is twitter the place to drive this?
  • Is there a secret cabal on twitter?
  • Facebook Page vs Group?
  • What is the wingspeed of a pigeon?
  • Can blog comments drive a movement?
  • What should the Codename Avian recruit be named?

I plan to find out. Let's begin with something simple and trust the crowd with the beginning.

What can we name our “warrior”? We want ideas from you.

Leave your suggestions in the comments or tweet them to @pigeonrace2009 with the #pigeonrace2009.

Then spread the word of the bird with the RT message below and link to this post:

RT @pigeonrace2009 spread the word of the bird #pigeonrace2009

The bounty is $500 for the best bird name. Fresh. Like this idea.

*Update:

We Have a Winner!

I chose a shortlist of names before the 27 Dinner in Durban last night. They were:

  • Wing Crosby
  • Airton Senna
  • Iggy
  • Steve
  • Winston
  • Birdi

At the end of my presentation I asked the assembled “geeks” (what's the collective noun for a collection of geeks?) and Winston won 7-6!

Thanks to all who helped out. Please DM @pigeonrace2009 with your name so that we can maybe send you a small something something...while stocks last.

Shaun, pls get in touch, we want to send you the money! Check out our site here: http://pigeonrace2009.co.za/.

*Update: This competition has seriously taken off! You can see a list of mentions worldwide here.

Am I the only one who has no idea what he's asking for?

@ Alphabet

We are having fun, and racing data between two points. A bird is the one means. The other is the normal landline. More will follow over the next few days.

All you need to do to be in with a chance to win $500 is name our bird.

Just give him an name like Valiant, Mossie or somthing like that, and you are in the draw for the cash. Simple as that.

Speckled Jim is taken so its gonna have to be "Berdinand Beetuinbush".

I immediately thought of Evil Kenevil crossed with a high board diver/great race character when I saw the picture and heard of its epic adventure. Very funny.

Reginald Columbus (Reco) the Rock Pigeon
(Columbus - the family name of the pigeon, being the type of bird used to carry notes and data in the past)

Posted by CJC on 2009/08/24

hey CJC, I actually really like the name Reco the Rock Pigeon, pity I'm gonna have to out think you on this one.... more to follow...I first need to immerse myself in a bath of crushed seaweed and cryptonite while I allow my creative juices to focus in on the $500 and the winning name for our feathered friend...

how bout "birdienumnums"??

Posted by ExMi on 2009/08/24

true story: i had a parrot named "birdie"....

Posted by ExMi on 2009/08/24

I immediately thought of Surfin' Bird by the Trashmen.

So I think... the bird should be called..

The Trashman!
