Ah, porn. Now here’s something people are loath to talk about. It’s the most promiscuous, flagrantly pink elephant you’re ever likely to see, and yet everyone simply pretends it’s not there. Everyone except for Mr. Oakes and I.
As Shaun so brilliantly illustrated in his recent post, there’s a lot we can learn from adult entertainment, and you have to be impressed by the role it’s played in both the adoption of new technology and the formation of today’s online world.

So, join me in taking a look at the numbers. There’s no denying they make for impressive reading.
Surprisingly, some people are too busy for porn – Reuters (2008)
- According to a study conducted by Bill Tancer, these days porn only accounts for roughly 10 percent of all online searches, which is 10 percent less than a decade ago
- Social Media is cited as the primary reason for this decline, as “young users spend so much time on social networks that they don't have time to look at adult sites.”

Porn at work (or men at work, if you prefer)
- According to a report published by Message Labs Intelligence, 70% of all online porn viewing activity occurs during the 9-5 workday - Message Labs Intelligence Monthly Report (September 2008)
Professional analysis: there are either a lot of bored teens sitting at home, or other professionals are a lot better at subverting office firewalls than I could ever hope to be.
Porn spam on the rise
- According to BitDefender’s latest E Threats landscape report, porn link spam accounts for 15% of Twitter traffic, 10% of MySpace traffic and 7% of Facebook traffic
- Earlier this year, a Twitter hack infiltrated 750 user accounts and used them to broadcast pornographic messages – iTWire (March 2009)
UK teens like their porn, but not as much as one might think
- Recent research conducted by OnePoll concluded that UK teens view 87 hours of online porn per year – TechRadar (February 2009)
- According to Nielsen NetRatings, about one-in-three visitors to adult entertainment sites are female, with 13 million American women checking out porn online at least once a month - WMBF News (August 2009)

- 47% percent of respondents to a Focus on the Family poll stated that pornography is a problem in their home
- According to a report by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the Internet is a significant factor in 2 out of 3 divorces

- A study by the Harvard Business School found that Utah boasts the highest percentage of online porn subscriptions per mille

- The same 50 porn producers also filed suit against 80 online adult companies for “abetting or neglecting to supervise such illicit distribution” - XBIZ (August 2009)
- After the prosecutors went after just 10 individuals, the studios responded earlier this month by reporting another 65,000 file-sharers and demanding action – TorrentFreak (September 2009)

- YouPorn is ranked 51st on Alexa
- In the past month, 1.26% of all Alexa toolbar users visited YouPorn
- Of these visitors, 18.8% were from the United States, 13.8% were from Germany, 12.7% were from Italy and 6.8% were from France
- RedTube is ranked 63rd on Alexa
- In the past month, 0.97% of all Alexa toolbar users visited RedTube
- Of these visitors, 21.6% were from the United States, 6.1% were from Brazil, 5.3% were from the UK, 5.3% were from Italy and 4.6% were from Poland
- Tube8 is ranked 71st on Alexa
- In the past month, 0.92% of all Alexa toolbar users visited Tube8
- Of these visitors, 24.0% were from the United States, 10.4% were from Japan, 5.3% were from Italy, 4.6% were from India, 4.2% were from Germany
