There is one golden rule in the world of online video. If you want to get views and exposure on a mass scale, make a music video. Nothing confirms this theory more evidently than the ‘most viewed’ section on Youtube.com. If you look at the 25 most viewed videos on youtube, 15 of these are music videos, tallying up to a jaw-dropping total of 1,224,931,039 billion views!
So how can we take advantage of this from a marketing perspective? One of these 15 music videos is Lonely Planet’s, “Jizz in my Pants.” A chauvinistic, tongue-in-cheek viral phenomenon that has clocked over 77 million views around the globe. Now, here comes the genius part. In response to this video, the ladies from Mstaken.com (a jewellery brand), posted a music video eloquently titled, “Puke in my Mouth.” The video was created in an identical style, as a feminine retort to “Jizz in my Pants,” while subtly advertising their brand.
Mstaken targets single women by selling fake engagement rings to fend off undesirable male suitors. This theme is seamlessly integrated into the video - a prime example of targeted advertising through user-generated content. “Puke in my Mouth” is already sitting on over 3 million views, so it’s definitely an effective technique in terms of exposure, but you’d have to email the ladies at Mstaken for a conversion rate. I love this - they've got a couple of really funny vids up and the site's a hoot.
