National Geographic has been making waves in viral cyber space recently. This well-known and much-loved brand has been making a very clever step of republishing their TV content onto the net before the cyber-geeks start pirating their own footage. Without seeming pushy, they have incorporated classic Nat Geo moments with a call to action, promoting the book of one of their (brave) photographers in this particular viral.
People now have the opportunity to witness these natural marvels without the constraints of having to be in front of a (DSTV-enabled) TV at a certain time. They are successfully connecting with their consumer base of nature enthusiasts and bringing these experiences to life in the form of these viral videos. This one in particular, in just under two minutes, tells an unexpected but incredible story, along with some breath-taking images and commentary. It’s so good that I had to watch it twice, and would love nothing more than to get my hands on that photography book! The 1,515,407 people that have watched it on YouTube stand testimony to the success of distributing content across different media and the subsequent power of content sharing. With an appetiser like this, I have no doubt that book sales will soar. Hats off to National Geographic and Mother Nature!
