It is a long-standing tradition all around the world for Girl Scouts (known as Brownies in South Africa) to sell cookies to raise funds for the Girl Scout Organisation.
For the past 80 years or so, Girl Scouts have sold their cookies to family and friends, door-to-door and standing outside shopping malls. Last year their cookie sales dropped by one percent, so they had to come up with a new strategy. Enter online marketing - with the help of virals, Facebook fan pages, Twitter streams and even a bit of basic email marketing, cookie sales are expected to soar in 2010.
Have a look at this video taken from the Girl Scouts’ YouTube channel:
Simple yet sweet, the Girl Scouts are learning skills which will become invaluable to them later in life. Not only does their cookie initiative turn them into mini entrepreneurs, but it has given them the opportunity to dabble in online marketing. Today business management requires an understanding of how to use social media and other forms of online communication. So whether you are managing a business on a large scale or small, being on board with online skills is essential – even the Girl Scouts are doing it.
