Smartphones have become all the rage of late. More people appear to be walking around with these “all-in-one” mobile operating systems; they help you organise all the facets of your life in a convenient way. So who are the frontrunners of this new status symbol?

The top Smartphones worldwide are as follows:

  • Symbian – 47.2%
  • RIM BlackBerry – 20.8%
  • iPhone – 15.1%
  • Windows Mobile – 8.8%
  • Android – 4.7%
  • Other – 3.4%

A comparison between the top five EU countries and the USA is as follows:

  • 32% - Italy has the highest Smartphone penetration rate out of the five biggest EU countries.
  • 28.3% - Spain
  • 22.9% - UK
  • 16.5% - Germany
  • 15.2% - France
  • 18.2% - USA, with 42.7million Smartphones from 234 million subscribers.

The results for the top five EU countries with regards to the type of Smartphone they choose:

  • 60.9% - Symbian
  • 8.3% - RIM BlackBerry
  • 14.5% - Apple iPhone
  • 4.1% - Microsoft Windows    
  • 2% - Android

The USA users differ from the Europeans in their choice of  Smartphones:

  • 43% - RIM BlackBerry
  • 25.1% - Apple iPhone
  • 15.7% - Microsoft
  • 7.1% - Android
  • 5.7% - Palm
  • Symbian is of a very low percentage, and did not feature in the results.

South Africa has not been left out of this revolution.

As the above table shows, the most popular Smartphone to access the Internet in South Africa is Nokia, which makes use of the Symbian OS.

As you can see there are many Smartphones out there with different functionalities, it could be the fancy name or the relationship you have with the company’s products that aids you in your choice of Smartphone. Whatever your preference, there is bound to be a Smartphone that will suit your lifestyle and needs.
