The creative minds at sporting giants, Adidas, have made a fantastic application for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The app, known as “Adidas Matchups” pairs two significant footballers (mainly strikers) against each other. The idea is to select your ideal player and predict all the scenarios that will happen thereafter.

Compare soccer players with the Adidas matchup application on Facebook.

For instance, in the screenshot above we have Yoann Courcuff (France) going toe to toe with Andres Guardado (Mexico). By clicking on the compare button, the page will progress to summarised profiles of each player. This information includes their date of birth, height, on-field position as well the type of soccer boots they wear.

Read up about your favourite soccer players.

After making your selection, you have the option of seeing an embedded video entitled “see him in action”. Naturally this is footage of the player’s performance in a recent fixture. You will also notice three tabs below the video option: friends, popular and all. "Friends" basically takes you to a comment you made and was in turn liked on the Adidas matchups fan page. “Popular” indicates the posts which generated the most likes and subsequent comments. "All" is a combination of all postings made since the initiation of the application.

At the top of the page you will notice a couple of options as well. Once you make your predictions of the player’s performance you will execute your prediction by selecting start. “All matchups” is a comprehensive list of all World Cup fixtures, allowing any user to view it from a group stage or knockout stage.

The leaderboard tab basically gives a breakdown of your position in comparison to all participants (especially your friends!) on this application. In my case, I have made one comment, three predictions which accumulated me a score of 150 and a ranking of #27832.

The recruit option allows you to recruit any friends you have on Facebook and would like to compete against during the tournaments tenure.

So how does this application work? Well, the most accurate predictions allow for a much higher ranking overall (global and local). This World Cup has been a real circus as most of the regular contenders have bowed out in the first round. This would certainly make this application highly entertaining as the tendency would be to predict in favour of a senior team.

Overall, the application is highly interactive and entertaining, providing World Cup fun between matches. Go on, give it a bash here.
