In April this year, Quirk launched the first of its short courses in WebPR for Professionals. With a class of enthusiastic professionals from marketing and communications backgrounds, the course was a great success and the feedback from our students was that the course was both practical and useful for their business.

Lauren Hamilton

The course is designed to teach you how to harness the power of the Internet and apply it to tried and tested PR tactics. You'll learn how to use the Internet to generate buzz around your brand and build its image by fostering relationships with your consumers in online spaces.

Lauren Hamilton is the Account Director at Hands On Communication, a digital agency in Johannesburg specialising in Social Network Marketing and Online Reputation Management. We chatted to her about her experience on the course.

What motivated you to want to do the WebPR course?

After studying an Honours degree in Corporate Communications in 2008 and then going on to open my own company specialising in Social Network Marketing and Online Reputation Management – I wanted to further my knowledge in the field and get accredited.

What were your expectations from the course and were they met?

I expected to know what was going on throughout the course because of my hands on experience with Social Media and ORM but I also expected to gain some more insight on these topics.

What did you enjoy about the course?

I really enjoyed working on the assignments – each of them was different and I felt that I was able to test myself in a way where I was not too restricted but could interpret the question how I thought was right.

How have you begun implementing what you have learnt for the company you work for?

I found that the course affirmed that what I am currently doing in my company is correct and I took away some things that I have started using in my company today.

Would you recommend the online distance-based way of learning?

Yes I would, definitely! It's quick and easy, but at the same time interactive. I found the forum discussions really helpful and encouraging.
