New Version of Google Analytics Launches Today!

Today, Google has announced the launch of a new version of Google Analytics. You can get the full scoop from Google on their blog post. The new platform will allow for faster development, and offers a great, new, easier to use interface.

For most, the biggest change you will notice is in the reporting interface: it’s slicker and quicker. However, the administrative changes will excite anyone who is managing or accessing large volumes of Google Analytics accounts. Being able to search quickly between accounts has made my life easier over the past few months. Hurrah!

Here is a quick guide to the new interface, so you know what to look forward to (or you have something to get you started!).

First of all, the administrative function is over there on the right hand side by the little cog. This is where you manage users, filters, goals etc.

Navigating around the new interface is easy and intuitive.

  1. Home takes you back to all your accounts. Dashboard is where you can create your sexy report dashboards (it’s worth mentioning here that we are big fans of dashboards, and the new dashboard interface will make you a fan too!), My Site is where all your standard reports are, and Custom Reports houses your custom reports.
  2. You can easily switch between Reports and Intelligence. If you’ve not made use of Intelligence before, what are you waiting for? Even if you don’t have access to the new version of Google Analytics, click on over to your Intelligence reporting to see what is happening on your site.
  3. Here is the navigation to the standard reports in Google Analytics. All the reports are there, but you’ll notice that they’ve been grouped slightly differently. What you will find is that it’s quicker and easier to navigate to the report that you want.
  4. Advanced Segments (and don’t let “advanced” put you off – they’re easy to use and super powerful) and report exporting options are at the top left of reports.
  5. Lastly, on any report graph, hover over the options on the right hand side to slice and compare data on the fly.

That’s a quick intro to the new version of Google Analytics. Over the next few weeks, when you log in to your Google Analytics account and reports, take a look at the top of the page for a link to the New Version. It’ll be rolled out to users in phases over the next few weeks. If you can’t wait to try it out, you can request earlier access by filling in the form.

If you are in Cape Town or Johannesburg, you can also join us at our Google Analytics Workshops in May. We’ll spend some time going over the new version of Google Analytics.
