South Africans love their sport. One of the favourites is our most successful national rugby team... The Springboks! The loyalty and culture that follows the Boks could easily rival the Barmy Army in terms of looks, chants and blind allegiance.
To show our Bokke support as they defend their Rugby World Cup crown in New Zealand, the Quirk Cape Town Culture Club organised a rendition of the South African war cry “Shosholoza”. Led by Siya Makoma, what followed was pure green and gold magic…
The video was subsequently aired on SuperSport on September 10, shortly after the Argentina versus England rugby match. It may not have gone viral, however, it’s a great example of how user (or fan) generated media made its way onto a prime slot in traditional media. There were 32710 opportunities to view the online conversation, with an estimated earned media value of R7524.
It just goes to show that YouTube and TV are starting to mesh, blurring the distinction between the “old” media companies and the feature that is user generated content.
