Getting To The Core Of Culture

by Emma Drummond

Before I start, let me mention that I’m sitting here at my desk in my jamies. Yes, PJs – the comfiest clothes in anyone’s cupboard. Why? ‘Cause it’s a pyjama party day here at the QuirkStation, of course. These monthly dress up days are just one of the small pieces that make up our Quirk cultural pie. As a taster, sink your teeth into these little nibbles:

Culture, you say?

It’s what sets us apart. It’s the things we say, the things we do and the way we do them. For us, culture is the set of shared attitudes, goals and practices that characterises the Quirk Group on a whole. While our offices are spread across the country (and the world), you’ll find this inherent cultural ethos in every single QuirkStar

It’s cultural fuel that often inspires creative action. Now I am not saying that if you dress up like a complete dummy, ideas will come shooting out of every orifice… I’m saying that things like this are a healthy breeding ground for the creative virus.

And yes, it’s a virus.

Oh no you didn't!

It works, because the people are at the core.

The people in your oragnisation dictate its culture. So choose them wisely. You don’t need to have a specific role to play a part. I’ve broken down some examples of the way people and individuals can lend themselves to being a part of the people culture.

  • Leadership culture: How leaders, from head honchos down to the newest of N00bs, represent themselves and facilitate learning and growing.
  • Achievement culture: How we respond to and reward various achievements, both in and out the workplace.
  • Support culture: What goes down when the going gets tough.
  • Role culture: Who does what when. Who can you rely on to calm the storm and who can you rely on to get people dressed up in their jamies and through the office front door. Or.... who you can rely on to show you how an award is celebrated:

Got culture?

You can’t really measure culture (well, perhaps we'll figure that out one day). It comes down to more of an energy, or a “vibe” as I like to call it. It lives and breathes in the right spaces where people feel compelled to respond to – and act on it. Sometimes, in ways we least expect, like this little prank which one of our Stars was treated with back in our old (old) office. This never seems to get old, as two years down the line, another Star arrived to find a little "surprise" waiting for them....

An organisation's job is to provide spaces where it can flourish. It’s also pretty important to communicate your culture internally… and then shout about it to the world with one voice! What companies need to get right from the get go, is aligning company culture with their strategic goals. Doing this means that you’re able to anticipate and adapt to change as it happens. And trust me, it happens.

That’s right; a company’s culture evolves and changes over time. It’s nothing to be afraid of, but as new people join and you bid farewell to others, as you grow and become more “corporate” – the energy will change. It’s important to embrace the evolution of culture. Just like our Chief Creative Office, Uncle Clint Bryce said – creativity’s about jamming. About playing together, improve style. Jamming is “walking the tightrope between analytical rigor and inspired passion”. Right in between those two is where culture fits in nice and snug. Kinda like my jamies, right now.
