Google Maps Goes Indoors (Just In Time For Christmas)

Google Maps has perfected the art of getting us from point A, to point B. And now, in what seems an exceedingly large step, the search engine giant has taken the concept of personal navigation to new heights.

Google Maps 6.0 for Android now allows users of the mobile app in the United States of America and Japan, to navigate their way through shopping centres, large retailers and airports.

Airports

Travellers can now make use of the app to find out where they need to check-in, find their gate in relation to their current location within the airport, and even find out where to do some last minute shopping.

Shopping Centres

Large shopping centres, such as the Mall of America, have already jumped on the Google Maps bandwagon. Their patrons can now navigate around the 6.9 kilometres of store frontage that they have on show.

Ikea is one of the first large retailers to get their flagship stores onto Google Maps and have even put together a demo video showing the application in action.

Cleverly, this arrives just in time for the dawn of the festive season, and will hopefully make Christmas shopping more efficient.

For indoor mapping, this is only the beginning. Who knows what could be next?
