Friday Fact Box: The State of Mobile In Africa

by Paul Milewski

2012/02/10

Mobile phone penetration is on the rise and rise in Africa, with many countries well above the global average of 60% of the total population. Essentially, a lack of fibre optic infrastructure with an average Internet penetration of as little as 11.5% means mobile networks have greater traction. For the majority of the continent, mobile is actually the only option for connectivity.

Industry estimates say Africa has around 500 million mobile users and subscribers, up from 246 million (an increase of 49.2%) from 2008. As early as 2002, there were only 49 million handsets in the continent. With the development of various undersea cables boosting capacity – more and more affordable mobile packages are predicted in a continent where people on average survives on between $2 - $5 a day.
