Avastar Video “Viral” Success

by Matt Swarts

This week, the South African online sphere was ablaze with mockery and laughter due to the online advert for the new Jozi nightclub, Avastar. Club owner, Mike Basson, introduces Avastar as a themed club following the likes of numerous Las Vegas nightclubs. The club is – as the name suggests - based on the movie, Avatar.

As the meme slogan goes, “haters gonna hate,” but with 34 000 views in the 9 days since it was uploaded on 1 June 2012, the video is a viral success. From the available analytics, it appears there was no paid media promotion – that is, all of the views were gained organically. This is remarkable for a South African video.

At Quirk, we’re often briefed by clients to create “viral content” and it’s become a bit of a swear word since you can’t just “create” viral content. But here is a brand that has created a promotional video that has become popular online, all on its own. The video may be a spoof or it may be perfectly serious, but it has been incredibly successful.

If you were at Avastar this weekend let us know. Was it full? Did people mention the YouTube video?

Seriously, this is a terrible approach to video viral marketing. The speech/pronounciation is very unprofessional; The club looks great, but the video did nothing for the promotion of this new venue.

It looks as if there was a gracious budget spent on the venue; why did they not leave a little for some professional video footage and a capable narrator.

In short, a complete disaster!

Hi Pierre.

I don't think the video was meant to become popular for being bad, I think it was meant to be popular because the marketing team of Avastar thought it was genuinely good.

It's ironic as we often have clients asking for viral content, which we craft and seed to a variety of sources and here Avastar have hit the viral success button with a very serious film, just because it is so badly made

I regularly drive by the new Avastar as it is very close to my home and judging by what it looks like on the outside, I believe that this video was a serious promotional attempt.

The big star/eye logo is prominently displayed outside and there are fake, coloured palm trees outside the building. These light up in various colours at night. Quite a sight to see!

By the look of things, I think the club might be just as popular as the video and probably for the same reasons...

SA master piece! This guy is not in character, he is the character, ok! What makes this such a classic for me is that the owner has put his life into this club and he has now put his hand up to promote his club as the Avatar for Avastar - fatastic!
Video is going to be the next means of communication for us here in SA as we get cheaper bandwidth and better speed to the internet.
We will be seeing plenty more of this type of stuff and I cant wait to see what will be produced, ok!
Yes you could make a better video, but it would not be as pure and we would not have been able to see the real Avatar - Mike Basson - in action!
Good job Mike and marketing team!

@Riaan: I think you have touched on a good point. With cheaper broadband access, we will be seeing more of this kind of video promotion. YouTube allows brands/owners to reach a huge audience for very little cost.

@Aliza: Have you been to the club? I would love to know if there is any connection between the popularity of the club and attendance at the club.

I had seen the club while going past one afternoon before it opened, when I heard it had officially opened I looked it up to see if I could get a feel for what people were saying... which led me to the video. That put me off for a bit, as I thought it wouldn't be my type of vibe, but then I thought I'd give it a try for the sake of trying somewhere new.
I was there this past Saturday and the place was quite busy/lively. Much different to what I expected.

The owner was walking around getting things done and I saw a few guys go up to him for a bit of "meet and greet".

So any which way... At least it got people talking!

@Polly. Thats exactly my point. Haters gonna hate, but if its resulted in people visiting the club the ad could be considered a success right?
