Love Hate Relationship with Gotye

Everyone is guilty of secretly loving a song that they’re actually ashamed of liking. Either that or the song is so catchy that you can’t help but sing along to the lyrics every time you hear it.

There have been various parody viral video cover versions of the Gotye song: ‘Somebody that I used to know’. My favourite version of these rip-offs is a video entitled ‘The Gotye song’ that portrays two guys, sitting in a car, making fun of the original version while declaring it as ‘the worst song ever’. The funny thing is that they don’t skip to the next song on the iPhone, but rather belt out the chorus (although they have no idea of what the lyrics are) with intense emotion.

Clearly, a good way of potentially getting your video to go viral - especially in the case of two guys who don’t have an established audience base - is to rip-off popular songs. In the last 5 days this video has had more than 4 million hits.

If you're interested in listening to other parodies of popular songs that have gone viral, take a look at the 'Call me maybe' covers, such as Harvard Baseball 2012 Call Me Maybe Cover & Star Wars Call Me Maybe.

Not true... I have no shame and will happily admit that the cheesiest of cheesy songs just make me happy.

How can anyone not smile/groan when the hear "Call Me, Maybe"? Although have to say that radio play can make things old pretty quickly.
