The good people at Coke have long been known to use holidays as marketing opportunities, and this year’s Valentine’s Day is no different. They’ve released a ludicrously cheesy advert - which is of course what people want this time of year - but if you can look past the soppiness, the clip is actually rather cute, and more importantly, it implants a very pleasant notion in the viewer’s mind: that of Coke actually being very fond of their consumer base.
The clip takes place in a park overlooking a city, with several Coke cans tied to helium balloons. They’re released, and couples are shown excitedly noticing the cloud of cool drink floating overhead. Some cans land near them or are caught by a few who then appreciatively enjoy the unexpected gift.
The imagery of the clip is full of happy couples enjoying the experience of catching the airborne beverages and sharing them. The ad then ends with a poignant shot of a couple watching a beautiful fountain, with a Coke and a cluster of balloons on either side of them, and a ‘happy Valentine’s’ wish from Coca-Cola.
Watch the ad:
The video was released on Valentine’s Day and as such was welcomed by loved-up viewers far and wide, receiving around 53, 000* views within a few days. My personal appreciation for this ad, though, is motivated by other factors – at the time of writing, it is 31 degrees Celsius, and the idea of an ice-cold Coke spontaneously floating into my hand would be a dream come true.

I think the original idea of the balloons is a great way to make people feel great. And being involved in making people feel great is great marketing.
