Viral Video: The Blue Bulls Ballad - Stand By Me

Here's a fun one for a Sunday. There’s nothing quite like watching a buff Blue Bulls rugby player lope across the field in an action-packed rugby match. One trembles at the fierce focus of a player charging for an opponent as the ground shakes beneath his feet and the crowd fills the stadium air with a deafening roar.

Well, at least that’s what comes to mind when I think of Pierre Spies and the rest of the Blue Bulls team. If, like me, this is what you’ve come to expect, then perhaps, like me, this viral video will make you smile.

In a humorous attempt to garner and sustain the support of Blue Bull fans everywhere, the team face their fears and train their vocal muscles in a public attempt of the song, 'Stand By Me' - originally performed by Ben E. King.

The buoyant Blue Bulls stand in perfect formation, with Pierre in the front taking the lead. He breaks into the first line of the song followed by Dewald Potgieter singing the second line, and then the entire team calamitously cascades into the chorus.

Let’s just say there’s no encouragement for the team to quit their day jobs, but I can see what they were trying to get at: even muscle-bound rugby players have human fears.

In this video, the Bulls show they are prepared to do anything for their fans, which includes engaging in an act that I imagine would send any rugby man into shivers, no matter how large: the act of singing in public. It’s a little cringe-worthy, but endearing nonetheless and I’ll certainly be donning a brilliant blue at the next game!
