The Rubbish Monster

by Claire McGuinness

This is not a new ad, so many of you may well have seen it, or at least heard about it, but I think it is worth another peek.

I love this ad because;
a)    It addresses one of my pet hates – littering!!!
b)    It is educational
c)    It is wonderfully animated.

So far the ad has won the local MultiChoice Vuka Award for best animation in 2006. It has also won another two awards for the “Commissioned Film of 1 Minute and Under” category at the Kalamazoo Animation Festival International (KAFI) in Chicago, and the “Jury's Special Prize” at the 11th Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival (SICAF) in South Korea. The spot was also officially selected at AniFest in the Czech Republic.

Yes, I also dislike people who litter. I daily see smokers throw their butts out of their car window( and other windows:-) ) and one of these days I will report them to the local police and then that R1000 rand fine will not be so funny. So beware!!!

Good one. I wish we could do a campaign like we had years and years ago... "zip'it in die Zibby blik" about littering. We call these people 'morsjorse' in Afrikaans. I take taxis almost every day and people sit there and rubbish gets chucked out of the taxi almost on a daily basis. Big mouth that I have, I have taken on quite a few people but you get 10 people shouting back at you that it creates jobs..... and then some.... tsk tsk

Dear Anti Smoking

R1000 fine is not goig to make you feel any better, or get the smell of smoke out your clothes.

Rather join up for our upcomig super soaker drive bay of al major cape town cafes where we will share our waterpistols with the smokers just like they share with us.

s.upersoaking.

Thanks folks for the smokers banter..but the litter problem addressed by The Rubbish Monster is far broader than that of stompies.
It is however a part of my pet hate - people who throw cigarette butts out of a car etc....considering the fact that the last major fire on Table Mountain was cause by one lone cocky English bloke ( yes I have met him and therefore can confidently say 'cocky') flicking his fag butt out of his car window whilst taking a drive along Tafelberg Rd!!

I digress - the point is that all litter is bad, and we as a nation have a shocking reputation for littering - we are all a part of the the problem if we are not part of the solution.

Hi Claire and pet haters,

It is REALLY good to see that The Rubbish Monster gets people talking about the BIG problem our country is facing.

The main reason why I created this animation is that I was walking down Long Street, observing a stranger littering continuously despite ignoring the dustbins all around him. I had enough of this and decided to approach the man and tell him where his litter belongs. He defiantly flashed his two middle fingers!

I was thinking, "Be grateful, I don't turn into a smelly rubbish monster and munch you! Starting with your middle fingers!"

It will take just 2 min to register and you are allowed to cast one vote per day. Try to cast vote once everyday since it has the same voting system as Idols. The winner will get airtime which means wider audiences. Come on! Please make it happen and spread your words!

I also aim to get it broadcast on SABC 1, 2 and 3 or ETV for wider audience.

Happy voting!

Regards,
Braam

Braam,

I am yet to vote as I am struggling to connect to the mnet link???? shall continue and let you know if problem persists.
I am happy to be of assistance and will actively spread the word with the aim of getting the ad some well deserver air time...if these litter bugs are not careful they will soon have an army of rubbish Monsters ( now there's an idea for a sequel) on their case - I too have had similar experiences to yours, but you -thankfully- have the ability to turn your experiences into a form of art with a strong message!! Nice.

Best regards,
Claire

P.S I actually love pets...and I shall not use that phrase in vain again!!! :)

Thanks, Claire!

I think you can just copy and paste the link. The problem is that it add the space (the "%20" symbol) in between "http://" and "www.mnet..." when you click the link.

The link worked once I removed the "%20" symbol. Is it possible to fix it?

Actually the beautifully illustrated children's book based on The Rubbish Monster will be out next year and we already have lots of ideas for the sequel. We will start working on it early next year.

Will keep you posted.

Happy fighting!

Regards,
Braam

P.S :)
