Email marketing blunder

by Lachlan McArthur

I was on an email subscriber list for MetaSolv - I used to work for them and maintained an interest in what they were up to. They did not do too much in the way of email marketing though, and most of the email shots they sent out were information on events they were either hosting or participating in. I had been on their subscriber list for a number of years, and although the emails were light in content, they were infrequent enough that I did not bother to unsubscribe.

However, over recent weeks they seemed to have stepped up the frequency a notch, and so I decided to unsubscribe. There was a link to an unsubscribe email address, with instructions that any text in the subject and body of the email would be ignored, and a blank email would also do the job. I clicked the link, and sent out a blank unsubscribe email.

Imagine my surprise when my unsubscribe email was bounced by the MetaSolv postmaster, with the statement that my mail had been identified as 'Unsolicited Bulk email' . MetaSolv decided my unsubscribe email triggered by a link in their newsletter was spam. SPAM!!! You have got to be kidding me. As far as I am concerned I have followed their instructions on unsubscribing from their newsletters; if I receive anymore emails from them then that is spam.

It was nice to see though that when it comes to online marketing they are consistent; type MetaSolv into Google and the only PPC ad that comes up is for Axiom, a major competitor of MetaSolv.

MetaSolv is a great company, with fantastic products, but come on guys - sort out your online marketing.
