Google Maps: Easy as pie... or is it?

by Tammy Joseph

Google Maps are fast becoming the smartest way to literally get customers to your doorstep

Google Maps allow you to find business location and contact information in ONE electronic resource.  You can find your nearest hotel, restaurant, etc. wherever you are without having to sieve through irrelevant information. What’s even more fantastic (especially if you have a terrible sense of direction like me) is that you can get detailed directions directly off the map! Just type in the address and Google Maps will plot your location and the driving direction for your desired destination.

As a Pay Per Click (PPC) marketer Google Maps are also proving to be a useful addition to our PPC campaigns. Adding your business to the Local Business Centre will allow you to set up Local Business Ads in your AdWords account.  Local Business Ads can be displayed on the Google Maps, Google SERPs or any of Google’s networks.

I haven’t had too much experience in setting up Google Maps (or even Local Business Ads for that matter) so I’m just learning as I go. Google does provide a guide on how to get your business listed and I’ve found a helpful blog post that provides a detailed step-by-step guide.
It’s actually a really simple process of adding your business information: contact details, rates, and hours of business, or whatever you want to be displayed.

As a PPC marketer, I have found one “inconvenience” (for lack of a better word) - once you’ve completed your listing, you are required to verify your information (with the pin number given to you) by initiating a call or sms. Although this is all good and well for security purposes, I have now found out that each time you edit your listing you have to verify it! And that gets a bit frustrating

The whole process proves rather difficult for me; since the number on my business listing is not a direct line to my office, but rather to my client. And if you’re marketing a hotel or a restaurant for example, you most likely want that number (that appears on the map) to take your customers to a switch board or general enquiries department.
So, every time I want to edit my ad, I have to relay the pin number to a person at the company I am marketing, and hope that no other calls come through to interrupt my verification.

Unfortunately I have still not been able to initiate a successful call to get my listing verified. And this is after several attempts and pleading emails to Google.

Anyone else experienced problems with this?

Nice one Tammy!

How do you think the CTR will be affected? And conversion rates?

Hi Tammy,

in order to initiate the confirmation sms you need to leave out the first zero of your cell phone number.
A bit irritating, but it works.

Cheers
Jurgen
