On Wednesday I was fortunate enough to slip out of the office for a few hours and make my way down to Kirstenbosch Gardens for a brand launch hosted at the Silver Tree restaurant. It was always going to be a more than pleasant experience and I thought, what the heck, I'll let my two assistants, Rob and Janine, tag along.
Okay, okay, that may not be entirely accurate (as I avoid death stares and finger across throat gesticulations...). Rob Stokes, our CEO, and Janine Carpenter, our COO – the guys who sign my paycheque and control my overall wellbeing – allowed me to tag along and join them for the launch of Mobiguide.
The launch took the shape of a neat presentation from the founders of Mobiguide, Amanda Forsythe and Dan Seidman, followed by an enjoyable demonstration in the gardens itself and finally a quiet glass of wine on the patio. Throughout the afternoon we enjoyed some brilliant finger-foods – especially the prawn and cottage cheese canapé, affectionately referred to as “those pink boytjies”.
But more seriously, you may be wondering what Mobiguide is and what they do? Well according to their website, which is well worth a visit:
“mobiguide produces audio/visual multilingual content which is focused on certain sites of interest in South Africa. As well as enhancing the actual destinations, mobiguide gives tourists a brief snapshot experience of the destination, helping you plan your South African travel itinerary.”
This content is available for download via mobile phones and other media players in a number of languages. At reasonable prices, Mobiguide is a product not only for foreigners, but for domestic travellers too. And then there is Mobitalk. This is something that you need to find out for yourself (what, do I look like an information desk?!), but I can tell you that it offers near-free instant messaging between mobile devices across the globe.
Mobiguide really is a very exciting addition to the South African tourism scene and we at Quirk are proud to have been involved with this project. So what are you waiting for? Go and visit the website here or access Mobiguide on your phone at http://www.mobiguide.tv/ and get yourself one of the free downloads.
