Some of you out there might remember that we recently set up a test site to put some SEO and PPC questions to rest. Could PPC benefit an SEO campaign?
My previous post told of an anonymous domain, consisting of three optimised pages of pure html. The page was targeted using Google AdWords for two variations of a term. I'd love to tell you the term, but this would be like letting a badger into an operating theatre.
There were no external links pointing to the site, and internal linking was a standard top navigational bar link, one in the footer and the obligatory contextual link.
AdWords was the only Google product to be used during the creation of the site. The address and keywords were not even mentioned over Google Talk for fear of contaminating the test results.
Within a week the site had been indexed - but this sparked confusion instead of celebration as the site had been catalogued without the 'www'. Had the PPC campaign affected an island of a page in some corner of the Internet, or missed a foot print on our way out?
We then added the site to Google Webmaster Tools for a better understanding. It was found to have no links pointing to it as expected. The site has not been spidered since that first day on February 24, and has yet to be indexed by Yahoo!.
So, for the moment it’s back to the waiting game – but we’ll publicise any findings as soon as they develop.
Doesn't the Google toolbar send information to Google about pages being viewed by the user? Some visitors might have had that installed.
If so, how can one be sure if the indexing took place because of adwords, or the toolbar sending the url to Google (visitors that clicked on the ads)?

I had a similar thing happen to me on my blogs test domain.
No links, nothing but somehow it got indexed.
My thinking is that being logged into some of the Google apps must persist across tabs or between logins... (is this another Facebook beacons situation?)
Damien, up for another test?
