For me writing blog posts is about taking an hour or two away from the regular tasks of the day and having a break. It's about finding something interesting and taking time to explore it a little and share it with others. On the odd occasion I might even try to add some insight or thoughts.
But it's not like this for everyone. After reading an article in the New York Times it becomes apparent that blogging isn't fun for everyone. And I suppose when you consider the fact that it is a means of earning a living for some, it becomes understandable that it may be considered work, because that's what it is.
Reading about the death of individuals that have been attributed to the stress generated by trying to produce blog posts that are fresh, informative and attracting high readership is quite scary.
To me, this emphasises how serious social media is and how much pressure some individuals feel in this industry. This also means that there is serious money involved.
This is particularly true for those writing on competitive topics such as technology, sports or news, where the first article is going to get the lion's share of readership, which equates to links and revenue - all this pressure potentially leading to serious health issues.
The final email of one of the bloggers, MR Shaw, was to his editor, “Have come down with something. Resting now posts to resume later today or tomorrow”. Wow. That drove it home for me.

Interesting article... I've always thought of this industry as being a great one to be in because we can work from anywhere. But while we think of ourselves as free of the constraints of a normal office job, we have a potentially worse problem - we are always connected and there is no real "downtime" unless you head out of cellphone reception (the horror!)
By the way, has anyone read anything about "death by reporting?" because I think I feel some chest pain coming on...
