Old Spice - What it means to be a real man

by Katharina Scholtz

So, arguably I’m not the best person to discuss what it means to be a real man. Despite this, I found this viral to be full of delicious one liners to repeat. It’s been a while since a viral has really made me giggle, and this one got it right.

Wild flowers and shame. How wonderful. I can’t help but be puzzled though, at the fact that they didn’t put their website at the end of the clip. I get that “1800 prove it” is their call to action (and I have to admit I couldn’t find any info on what happens when you call), but why not take advantage of the fact that viewers are already online? Ignoring the referral potential is just, well, dumb.

A brief look at their website shows that it’s something they should want to show off as well; it maintains the tongue in cheek tone and has a pretty cool “metaphorical generator of sports metaphors” to keep you entertained for.. well..10 seconds.

They also have a feature that analyses your body hair “patterns” and tells you a bit about yourself based on that. Granted, the navigation is a bit shoddy, but if someone finds the viral funny you’d surely want to take advantage of that and get them to interact with your brand – something the site already facilitates.
