Twing - searching discussions

by Katharina Scholtz

This neat little search engine searches forums. I came across it on Web2.ohreally, where Craig Stoltz discusses what Twing essentially does - it searches the “Deep Web”; everything that's hidden because Google doesn’t spider it.

Twing, according to its creator, helps you when you’re looking not just for “information about the thing, but for conversations about the thing.”

Being a big believer in the power of conversations, I can’t help but get a little excited about this type of search. For most people it can offer an immediate channel to great advice, given by real people in specialised forums.

For a brand the benefits fit into the realm of Online Reputation Management. Tapping into a conversation can teach you a lot about what you should be doing, or whether you are being discussed – and in what kind of forum.

There is a fine line to be treaded here though. Some of Twing's charm lies in the fact that it enables you find conversations that are happening almost underground, not on blogs and sites that are designed to get a message out there - these are conversations happening because people are looking for advice.
When representing a branded entity we should be careful about how we interact, and respect the nature of the forum.
