Another conceptual search engine has hit the scene, and like me, you might find it useful at times. Search Me, modelled on the memory-eating coverflow view now common on most Apple products, is not by any means the most practical search tool to use on a daily basis, but it does have its uses.
The search engine results page (SERP) features a browseable ‘thumbnail snapshot’ preview of the most relevant websites allowing you to identify your potential destination at a glance. The searched keywords are neatly highlighted throughout the page, which does come in handy.
The layout of Search Me is neat and tidy, with a URL, meta title and description popup available when hovering over the thumbnails. The engine also provides a live update of possible categories while typing in your query in an effort to provide relevant results.
While typing in “Table Mountain”, for instance, the engine displays suggested hiking and climbing categories before even hitting search to narrow down the list of possible destinations.
The Flash based engine was created with in cahoots with Adobe, and includes few personalisation settings other than a colour setting (day or night, i.e. black or white theme) and a safe search feature.
While I doubt the thumbnail approach to search results will ever overtake the simplicity of other popular engines such as Google, it does come in handy for finding a specific site that you’ve visited before without having to open tons of tabs. In their own words, “you'll know it when you see it” – a very handy aspect of Search Me.
